January is Human Trafficking Awareness Month

Human trafficking is a serious crime and a public health issue that exploits vulnerable individuals and undermines the health and well-being of families and communities. It includes the forced or fraudulent recruitment, harboring, or transportation of people for labor or commercial sex. Trafficking can occur both in person and online and may involve strangers or individuals known to the victim, including employers, partners, or family members.

“Human trafficking affects young people and families right here in our own community,” said Marsha Foote, Director of the Ontario County Youth Bureau. “This is a preventable crime. By raising awareness, education, and community connections, we can protect those who are at risk. We encourage residents to learn the signs of trafficking and report concerns.”

National estimates indicate that 27.6 million people worldwide are subjected to human trafficking, with cases reported in every U.S. state.

Locally, Ontario County continues to see the impact of this issue with 22 referrals related to Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children (CSEC) made in 2025. County service providers spent an average of 194 hours of direct services supporting CSEC-impacted youth.

“By illuminating the County Courthouse blue, Ontario County stands in solidarity with victims and supports advocates of human trafficking,” said Bill Wellman, Chairman of the Ontario

County Board of Supervisors. “The blue light serves as a visible reminder of Ontario County’s commitment to raising awareness of human trafficking and promotes efforts and education to prevent exploitation in our communities.”
